Welcome...

... to my website!

I am a research group leader in the Department of Linguistics at the German Department and at the Institute of Translation and Interpreting at Heidelberg University. In the winter semester 2026/27, I hold the interim W3 professorship for Digital Humanities at the University of Freiburg. After studying Linguistics, Philosophy and Psychology, I pursued a PhD in Computational Linguistics, motivated by my fascination with automated text analysis methods. My dissertation dealt with the automatic reconstruction of implicit knowledge in argumentative texts.

Since then, my research has focused on applying computational methods and machine learning, in particular large language models (LLMs), to linguistic questions as well as to research questions from the Digital Humanities and Social Sciences. I am also interested in corpus-linguistic methods, annotation studies, discourse pragmatics, contrastive linguistics, grammatical patterns in discourse and across text types, media linguistics, argumentation analysis, specialized language research, and science communication and knowledge transfer. You can find more information about my research and teaching further down on this page.

CHAI Lab: Computational Humanities & AI

In my research group, an interdisciplinary project team investigates a range of research questions from the humanities and social sciences using computational approaches, in particular large language models and methods from (corpus) linguistics, computational linguistics and natural language processing. In the winter semester 2026/27, I am taking up the interim professorship for Digital Humanities at the University of Freiburg. My teaching and research there focus on computational methods in the humanities – from corpus analysis and annotation to the critical use of generative language models. I am very much looking forward to the Freiburg (DH) community and to working with the students!
In August/September 2026, two more papers from my research group were published: Brocai, B./Becker, M.: Pair Difficulty Matters: Rethinking Pairwise LLM-as-a-Judge Evaluation and Consistency (EMNLP, Main Conference) & Liu, P./Becker, M.: Krisenproduktion oder Flächenstilllegung? Eine korpuspragmatische Analyse zu moralisierenden Sprachhandlungen im Diskurs um Ernährungssicherheit. (edited volume Ökologische Diskurse heute, transcript). Congratulations to Bruno and Pinxiu on their great work!
In March, as part of the GIP partnership (Germanistische Institutspartnerschaft – German Studies Institutional Partnerships worldwide), I taught courses at the universities of Yerevan and Tbilisi on using generative language models and prompt engineering for linguistic research projects. Alongside the fundamentals, the focus was on interactive exercises and an intensive academic exchange.
